Overview

Academic healthcare organizations embrace a tripartite mission that includes clinical care, research, and education.

Description

A common incentive offered to clinician-scientists to bolster academic productivity is dedicated research time.   Dedicated research time necessarily interferes with clinical productivity.  Therefore, it is important for departmental leaders to determine if dedicated research time leads to meaningful academic productivity.  Likewise, it is important to determine how much dedicated research time reduces clinical productivity.  Departmental leaders are frequently faced with resource allocation decisions designed to optimize both clinical and academic production but have limited data to guide these decisions.  Therefore, understanding how dedicated research resource allocation affects research and clinical productivity would help departmental and institutional leaders optimize resource allocation
