Comparison of Two Group Wellness Interventions in Partner Caregivers of Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Overview

The purpose of this research study is to compare the effect of two different types of group wellness interventions for partner caregivers of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The Life Reentry program is a web-based grief counseling intervention that provides participants with specific strategies to help them process feelings of grief and overcome fear of the future that is associated with grief. The Life Reentry program is in growing clinical use, but its application has been primarily restricted to individuals who are adjusting to the death of a loved one. Thus, this program has not yet been applied to or studied in partner caregivers of people with TBI. Therefore, the proposed study will evaluate the effectiveness of the Life Reentry program in partner caregivers of individuals with TBI.

Description

Depending on group assignment, participants will attend either the Life Reentry® program or a TBI Education series (“Life After TBI”) that provides information about TBI and living with disability. Both programs will involve the same treatment time (one 75-minute class per week for 6 consecutive weeks), and will be delivered online through a commercially-available teleconferencing interface (Zoom.com). Participants in both programs will be given homework assignments to encourage them to apply class content to their own lives and will have access to online forums to communicate with classmates. Classes will be recorded through the Zoom.com interface and participants will be provided view-only access to those recordings in the event that a class is missed. If a participant misses one or more classes, study staff and course instructors will assess the circumstances of those absences and the participant’s level of involvement in homework assignments and online forum activity to determine if continued participation is appropriate. Efforts will be made to accommodate participants’ situations whenever possible.
