Overview

Researchers at IU School of Medicine and Purdue University are looking for post-menopausal women to take part in a study to determine if taking a hormone called progesterone can reduce the risk of a heart rhythm abnormality.  
 
 

Description

Who is Eligible
  • Women at least 50 years of age or older
  • Have gone through menopause
  • Do not have an allergy to peanuts
  • No history of heart attack, coronary heart disease or heart arrhythmia requiring treatment
  • No diagnosis of heart failure and/or must not have a pacemaker
  • No history of breast, uterine or ovarian cervical cancer
  • No history of hysterectomy and/or ovariectomy
  • No history of long QT syndrome
  • Must not be undergoing hormone replacement therapy (estradiol, progesterone and/or testosterone)
What Participation Involves
  • Attend 3 study visits to the Indiana Clinical Research Center at University Hospital in Indianapolis.   
  • You will be asked to take progesterone or a placebo for 7 days before your visit.
  • During two of the study visits, you will be given a drug called Covert through an IV, blood samples will be taken and you will wear a heart monitor.
Compensation
  • Participants will receive up to $500 for completing all of the study requirements.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    healthy,menopause
  • Age: Between 50 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: Female

Additional Criteria:
  • Have gone through menopause
  • Do not have an allergy to peanuts
  • No history of heart attack, coronary heart disease or heart arrhythmia requiring treatment
  • No diagnosis of heart failure and/or must not have a pacemaker
  • No history of breast, uterine or ovarian cervical cancer
  • No history of hysterectomy and/or ovariectomy
