HOOSIERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Join Our Study and Help Prevent Fatal Opioid Overdoses in Indiana!

Overview

**THIS STUDY HAS BEEN CLOSED AND IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS**

DO YOU LIVE IN BOONE, HANCOCK, MONROE, DEARBORN, or MADISON COUNTY?
**Join our study and help save lives in Indiana!**

The opioid epidemic has lead to a significant number of deaths and strain on emergency response systems in Indiana and across the nation.

Opioid overdose requires a rapid response, which is often not available through standard emergency procedures, particularly in rural areas and densely populated urban communities.

That is why researchers in the Department of Public Health at Indiana University are developing and testing the effectiveness of a rapid response system for recruiting, training, and linking citizen responders to overdose events so they can administer lifesaving Naloxone/Narcan.

Your participation will help researchers to develop an effective procedure for reducing deaths from opioid overdoses and emergency response system costs.

Description

Who is Eligible
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Speak, read and understand English
  • In overall good physical health
  • Must live in Boone, Hancock, Monroe, Dearborn or Madison county in Indiana
  • Must not already be certified as a first responder (e.g. healthcare professional, police officer, sheriff, firefighter, paramedic)
What is Involved
  • Complete a short (up to 30 minutes) self-paced online training to learn how to administer Naloxone/Narcan, the life-saving drug used to treat opioid overdoses
  •  Complete online questionnaires at the beginning and end of the study
  • As part of participating, a Naloxone/Narcan nasal spray kit will be shipped to your home
Compensation
  • Participants will receive up to $10 in gift cards for completing the study requirements (a $5 gift card for completing the pre-study questionnaire and Naloxone/Narcan training; another $5 gift card for completing the post-study questionnaire)
