Overview

The purpose of this study is to better understand how listeners develop the skills to understand speech and how hearing loss, dyslexia, and bilingualism influence the development of these skills. The research will investigate this issue by testing how children and adults perceive foreign-accented speech, a common, real-world source of speech variability.

Description

The objective of this research is to increase our understanding of how listeners develop the skills to compensate for variability in the speech signal and how hearing loss, dyslexia, and bilingualism influences the development of these skills.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    hearing loss,dyslexia,healthy
  • Age: Between 3 Years - 24 Years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria
Children will be between the ages of 3 and 17 and adults will be between the ages of 18 and 24
Normal hearing OR hearing loss with mild to moderate bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and no additional disabilities
Monolingual or bilingual speakers of English
Listeners with dyslexia will have a professional diagnosis by self-report with typical cognitive abilities
Exclusion Criteria
Diagnosis or suspicion of any cognitive, neurological, or developmental problems
