Building Emotion Self-awareness Teletherapy (B.E.S.T)

Overview

Indiana University School of Medicine is conducting a study to find out if a remotely delivered educational training program about emotions can help people have better emotional health after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - This study is no longer accepting volunteers from the general public. Potential participants will be contacted directly by the study team about study participation.

Description

 What the study involves:
  •  Assessment Visit 1 and Screening: Remote video conferencing, in combination with electronic surveys, will be used to conduct this visit.  We will collect demographic data (e.g., age, education, race, ethnicity) and information about your brain injury and relevant medical history. We will conduct a few surveys to determine your ability to process, understand, and manage your emotions, as well as surveys to evaluate your mood, loneliness, substance use and experience with pain. The information you provide will help us determine if you meet the criteria to participate in the training. This session will last approximately 90-120 minutes. If after this visit you are found ineligible, your study participation will be complete.
  • Assessment Visit 2: Visit 2 will be very similar to Visit 1, but without the demographic, injury, and medical questions. This visit is expected to last approximately 60-90 minutes.
  •  Training: Training will include eight remotely delivered sessions over a 4-5-week period that will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
  •  Assessment Visits 3 and 4: These visits will be very similar to Visit 1. Visit 3 will include some satisfaction surveys and will take place within approximately 1 week of completing the training.  Visit 4 will occur approximately 3 months after training has ended. These visits are expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

Why participate?
  • Potential to improve your ability to manage your emotions
  • May help you be more effective at working through and overcoming distressing emotions
  •  May improve your emotional connection with others
  • You will be compensated for your time
  • You will help contribute to knowledge needed to achieve better emotional health outcomes for people with a brain injury
