Overview

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAVE DYSPHAGIA?  Join our study!

Researchers at the Purdue University I-EaT Swallowing Lab are developing a new wearable device (that goes under the chin) that has the ability to measure muscle activity by remotely monitoring swallowing.

We are inviting adults with a history of stroke or Parkinson’s disease, ages 55-90, who have a swallowing disorder (dysphagia) to help us test these sensors so that we may develop better treatments for people with swallowing disorders.

Description

What Will Happen During Study Participation

1) You will complete an in-person screening visit (30 min) to see if you may qualify.
2) If you are eligible and choose to participate, you may be asked to attend two in-person study visits (first visit: ~2.5hours; second visit; ~2.5 to 3 hours) at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) that will include the following:
  • Completing questionnaires about your general health, swallowing and eating difficulties, and quality of daily life.
  • Swallowing various foods and liquids and doing swallowing exercises while wearing *electromyography (EMG) sensors that are attached via stickers or a patch under your chin; these sensors will allow the researchers to record muscle activity when you swallow.
  • Swallowing barium (a chalky white contrast) in different volumes and forms (liquid and semi-solid) during a videofluoroscopy (a moving x-ray video of swallowing) before and after you perform the swallowing exercises.

*This procedure is non-invasive and does not transmit any electricity to the skin; it just measures the activity of muscles when people swallow.

Incentive/Compensation
  • Participants may receive up to $55 for completing both study visits.
