Overview

Researchers at Indiana University are looking for volunteers to take part in a study to compare your performance between three different cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) types.

CPET is a tool that can assess heart and lung health. In general, CPET involves performing exercise on a stationary bike while wearing a face mask that measures the amount of oxygen you are using and the amount of carbon dioxide you are making.

This study is inviting people who are on dialysis AND people who are healthy with no chronic medical conditions to participate.

Description

Who is Eligible to Participate?
  • Adult dialysis patients (at least 3 months on dialysis)
                  OR
  • Healthy adults with no chronic disease
  • Must be physically able to perform exercise tests
What is Involved if I Participate?
1) Complete screening to determine eligibility
2) If eligible, you will be asked to attend 3 CPET testing sessions at University Hospital in Indianapolis, IN
3) Agree to participate in the FIT Core study
4) First visit requires around three hours of your time. The other two visits require about an hour of your time.

Study testing sessions will include: handgrip strength test, repeated chair stands, walking tests, cycling tests, body fluid status assessment, providing small blood samples, and bone scans.

Will I be Compensated?
  • Participants will receive $50.00 in cash upon completing each visit for a total of $150.00 for completing all visits.
  • Participants will only be compensated for the visits that they complete. Participants who refuse to attempt to perform the CPET during a study visit will not be compensated for that visit.
  • Lyft will be provided if needed if you reside within 25 miles of the study site. Parking validation will be provided if you drive yourself to study site.
