Potential Chronic Brain Health Effects of Concussion

Overview

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the effects of concussion and/or head impact exposure among former military service academy cadets/midshipmen and NCAA student athletes who are up to 10 years out of graduation from their respective institution.

Description

Participants who sign an informed consent form will be asked to attend one study visit. During this visit, researchers will take participants' vitals and a blood sample. Participants will be asked to complete health questionnaires and undergo an MRI.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    concussion, traumatic brain injury
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
  • NCAA CARE 1.0/2.0 participant (>5 years since departure from undergraduate institution)
  • Diagnosed with > 1 concussion/mTBI during CARE, with at least one post-injury visit (partially or fully complete) and Participated in contact/collision sport with HIE during college tenure* for > 2 years
  • OR No diagnosed concussion/mTBI during CARE and No participation in contact/collision sport with HIE during college tenure
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Development of significant medical illness unrelated to concussion/HIE
  • Employment in job associated with repetitive blast or blunt head impacts within 12 months of Tier 2 visit
  • Participation in a repetitive activity associated with risk of concussion/mTBI and/or HIE within 12 mos of Tier 2 visit 
  • Diagnosed concussion/mTBI after graduation, or Participation in repetitive activity associated with risk of concussion/mTBI and/or HIE
