Coping with Cancer-Related Economic Burden

Overview

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the financial burden of cancer treatment, and how it affects patients with cancer. Researchers will use this information to improve support services for patients in the future.

Description

Participants will be asked to complete two surveys. Survey topics will include education, employment, income, health insurance, medical conditions, physical symptoms, experiences and attitudes towards the cost of treatment, and how the participant manages difficult experiences.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, neuroendocrine cancer
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
  • diagnosed with stage I, II, or III breast, gastrointestinal, lung, or prostate cancer or limited stage (any T, any N, M0) non-small cell lung cancer or neuroendocrine tumor
  • Receiving anti-cancer therapy (chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or endocrine therapy) currently or <6 months ago at Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC), another Indiana University Health clinic, or Eskenazi Health
  • at least 18 years of age
  • score <25 on the Comprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST) measure (established cutoff for at least mild financial distress)
  • has adequate English fluency for completion of data collection
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Patient makes 2 or more errors on a validated 6-item cognitive screener or exhibits significant psychiatric or cognitive impairment (dementia/delirium, intellectual disability, active psychosis) that in the judgment of the investigators would preclude providing permission and study participation.
